Tomasz Kowalski (Szczebrzeszyn, 1984) presents Sanatorium, an exhibition conceived specifically for the Fondazione Sandra e Giancarlo Bonollo per l’arte contemporanea in Thiene. Housed within a former church and psychiatric hospital, the works on display reactivate the building’s layered histories — devotion, confinement, illness, and introspection — transforming them into an active psychological presence.
In his most recent works, the artist explores the question of simultaneous realities through the metaphor of the sanatorium and the psychiatric hospital, understood as suspended spaces outside ordinary temporality, where perception enters a liminal dimension and the boundaries between memory, hallucination, emotion, and physical reality become indistinct.
Tomasz Kowalski’s figures breathe within thresholds of possibility, both imaginative and physical: bodies, interiors, and atmospheres continuously shift toward metaphor, while painting itself becomes a portal to unstable mnemonic and psychological dimensions — an alchemy through which pigments turn into worlds and brushstrokes into presences.
