Extract from the curatorial essay of Francesco Leggeri
26.09.2026
Opening: 26 September 2026 at 3.30 pm | The exhibition is open every Friday and Saturday from 4 to 7 pm at the former Farmacia Pretto, Via Santa Maria Maddalena 84, 36016 Thiene (VI), Italy.
For Damiano Colombi (Bressanone, 1994; lives and works in Venice), drawing is not an image but a means of navigating and finding one’s way through space.
The pattern, the most recent element in his practice, is a structure for understanding space: a form before form, capable of containing a volume that has yet to emerge.
His abstraction does not arise from a departure from reality, but from an extreme synthesis of the landscape, condensed into line, curve, intersection and field of colour.
The landscape does not disappear: it remains as a structural memory, embedded in dense, layered colours and in traces of paths, coordinates and deviations.
The works thus construct open systems and mental territories in which the landscape is not merely something to be observed, but something one moves through—and is transformed by.
Housed in a former pharmacy, the exhibition heightens the diagnostic dimension of the work: the lines evoke clinical charts, while the overlapping layers recall medical scans or X-rays.
Backlighting passes through the sheets, revealing a landscape concealed beneath the surface. Acrylic applied over wax also behaves like living tissue, resembling an organic fluid, skin or a membrane in a constant state of transformation. Drawing becomes an analytical tool that seeks to reveal not the appearance of things, but their invisible structure.
Through this tension between map and organism, landscape and diagnosis, surface and depth, Colombi’s practice explores the question of orientation in an age when our coordinates seem constantly to elude us.
THE PROJECT
Pillole d’Arte is a pilot project by the Sandra and Giancarlo Bonollo Foundation for Contemporary Art, introducing audiences to emerging artists who are not yet represented by a gallery, either in Italy or abroad.
The Foundation selects the artists directly — either introduced by artists close to the Foundation or through direct acquaintance — according to criteria of artistic interest and expressive originality in their visual language.
Pillole d’Arte takes place in the spaces of the former Farmacia Pretto, made available through the kind concession of Marina and Antonio Pretto. (farmaciapretto.it)
