La mostra rivela l\u2019approccio del fotografo sudafricano, interessato a indagare la verit\u00e0 e le possibilit\u00e0 del medium fotografico. Ritratti a figura intera o a mezzo busto, spesso nudi, i suoi soggetti guardano fisso l\u2019osservatore, diventando protagonisti di una scena che prende le distanze da tutto ci\u00f2 che \u00e8 accaduto prima o accadr\u00e0 dopo. \u00a0I volti e i corpi delle persone incontrate da Hugo raccontano la loro identit\u00e0 al di fuori di stereotipi o categorie. Attraversa il ritratto in studio, la fotografia documentaria e composizioni messe in scena, con un approccio sempre diretto, che interroga il modo in cui storia, contesti e tempo si imprimono sulle persone, sui luoghi e sulle culture visive. Che si tratti di sottoculture, identit\u00e0 marginali, conseguenze di conflitti, autorappresentazione o dimensione familiare, Hugo usa il ritratto come un luogo di frizione fra apparenza e umanit\u00e0 condivisa, fra estetica e responsabilit\u00e0 dello sguardo. Tra le serie pi\u00f9 note: <em>Kin<\/em> (sul Sudafrica e le sue tensioni politiche e sociali), <em>The Hyena Men<\/em> (Nigeria), <em>Nollywood<\/em> (ritratti che reinterpretano l\u2019industria cinematografica nigeriana) e <em>La Cucaracha<\/em> (Messico).
